GROWTH / CONTROL

Crowdfunding stretch goals: check the delivery burden first

A stretch goal may be worth discussing, but extra colours, parts or functions also change the work. Decide from product readiness and delivery capacity. Do not assume you need the same mechanism simply because another campaign uses it.

01

Treat the idea as a scope change

List extra design, sourcing, testing, packing and communication tasks. A new colour is more than a changed render. It may require samples, quantity allocation and stock tracking. Compare that work with the current critical path before deciding whether to announce the idea.

02

Check more than the part price

A small accessory can change box size, assembly time or support needs. If it requires a new carton, recheck transport cost and protection. Separate unit costs from work needed for the whole batch. A verbal estimate from a supplier is not yet a reliable basis for a public commitment.

03

Define who receives the addition

Specify the rewards, backers and timing covered by the offer. Keep the page and updates consistent. Vague wording can make everyone assume an extra is included. You can keep researching a feature without promising it publicly before tests, costs and responsibilities have been confirmed.

04

Keep the option of no extra scope

Progress updates, better demos and clearer instructions can respond to backer interest without adding a stock-keeping unit. If an extra goal threatens delivery of the original promise, focus on the agreed product. Complete an internal review first, then decide whether there is a responsible option to put forward.

05

Put this into practice

  • List added design, testing, packaging and supplier work.
  • Recheck total delivery cost and the critical path.
  • Define eligible rewards and conditions before announcing.
