Crowdfunding localisation: check more than the translation

Localisation is more than swapping Chinese for English. Names, units, examples, captions and links should help both audiences understand the same product. The aim is not a stronger promise. It is a clearer explanation without changing the facts.

01

Agree on terms and facts first

Maintain a glossary for product names, accessories, features, units and brand terms that should stay unchanged. If one source term refers to two modes, the language team needs clarification. They should not guess the product design. Have a product owner verify the fact sheet before it becomes scripts or graphics.

02

Use relevant scenes without inventing variants

You can adapt examples and the order of an explanation. You cannot change what the product can do. A portable device shown abroad may need a different plug or accessory. If that version is not confirmed, do not simply replace it in the image and imply it is available. Check the scene against the plan.

03

Treat voice, captions and pages differently

Voiceover needs spoken rhythm. Captions need short, readable lines. A page can explain more conditions and specifications. Do not paste one long translation into all three. Check timing against the footage, then review numbers, model names and words such as “not”. A small omission can reverse a technical claim.

04

Test the action as well as the words

Language switches should lead to the matching page. Both versions should describe the same stage, rewards and contact options. Let a product expert check facts and a fluent target reader check meaning. Those reviews serve different purposes. Smooth wording by itself is not proof that the product information is accurate.

05

Put this into practice

  • Verify names, numbers, units and model references.
  • Review voice, captions and web copy as separate formats.
  • Test language switches and contact links end to end.
